Photographing Baby Number Two At Home
Real smiles, Real laugther, Real chaos
One of the most heart-warming parts of my job as a motherhood photographer is returning to families I’ve worked with before. A few years ago, I photographed this couple’s first son as a newborn, in those same early weeks where everything feels new and slightly overwhelming. Recently, I had the joy of coming back to meet their second baby. Walking into their home again felt familiar in the best way. Same space, but a very different stage of their family story. There was a tiny newborn again, but this time also an energetic toddler who seemed determined to keep things interesting from the moment I arrived.
A Toddler Who Kept Me on My Toes
Before the session, Mum mentioned that her eldest rarely stays in one place for long. And she was right! But, to be honest I am yet to meet a 2 year old who isn't always on the move. So, instead of trying to slow him down, I just followed his lead. One moment we were looking at books together on the floor of his bedroom, the next he was running off to find his favourite Jellycat rabbit. At one point he proudly demonstrated how well he could jump onto Dad, which quickly turned into a full fit of giggles from everyone. Those in-between moments ended up being some of the family's (and my) favourite images from the whole morning.
Letting the Morning Unfold Naturally
When I prep parents for their in-home photoshoot, I always recommend adopting a go-with-the-flow attitude. Mum and Dad were very relaxed from the start, which completely shapes the tone of a newborn photoshoot. We didn’t try to stick to a rigid plan. We just moved through the house and followed whatever was happening at the time. If the baby needed feeding, we paused. If the toddler wanted attention, we went with it. If things went quiet, we leaned into those moments too. There was a lot of chatting as we went, and nothing ever felt rushed. That slower pace meant everyone stayed relaxed, which always shows in the final photos we create.
I've written more about how to get natural family photos that look and feel like you. If you're after unposed and unscripted photos, grab a cuppa and read my blog post here.
Returning to a Family Again
It was genuinely so lovely to see this family again and hear how life has changed for them since our first session. There’s something quite special about photographing families at different stages like this. You see how children grow, how relationships shift, and how parents settle into a new rhythm with each baby. Being invited back into their Bristol home for these early weeks again was a real privilege.
A Gallery Full of Real Family Life
Looking through these beautiful family photos now, what stands out most is how naturally everything unfolded and how at ease everyone felt. A toddler who was full of energy but completely himself. Parents who relaxed and went with the flow. A newborn who was simply held, fed, and cuddled as the morning moved around them. Nothing forced. Nothing overly styled. Just everyday family life as it is right now.

KIND WORDS | Newborn Photoshoot
“We had a brilliant experience with Debbie, she made us feel so comfortable and relaxed it was such a wonderful few hours. The tips for beforehand were very helpful and we’re so in love with the images she captured, it was so hard to narrow them down! We’ll be booking again for a family shoot when our little one is older.”
