5 Expert Tips for Exhausted Parents
from Little Dreams Consulting Bristol
My guess is, you're here searching for baby sleep tips because the nights feel long, sleep is firmly in its unpredictable era, and you are more exhausted than you ever thought possible. I can guarantee you’re not alone.
As a Bristol newborn photographer at Little Bodhi Photography, I speak to so many parents who tell me the same thing during sessions: “We just feel so tired.” Let's be honest for a moment, sleep deprivation can take the shine off even the most beautiful newborn bubble. And while every baby is different, there are gentle, practical ways to support better sleep.
That’s why I’m thrilled to be sharing some much needed sleep advice from award-winning local sleep consultant Fay Smith at Little Dreams Consulting Bristol. If your little one's sleep is feeling unsustainable right now, these five expert-backed tips are a brilliant place to start.
1. check out the lullaby trust
Before adjusting your baby's routines or nap schedules, safe sleep is the foundation.
Fay recommends the UK charity The Lullaby Trust who offer trusted guidance on keeping baby safe while they sleep, including tips for reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Their key recommendations include:
- Keep your baby’s room between 16–20°C
- Always place your baby on their back to sleep
- Use a firm, flat sleep surface
- Keep the sleep space clear and clutter-free
If you’re unsure about safe sleep practices, The Lullaby Trust website is an excellent resource for reassurance and clarity.
Keep it dark
A dark room helps babies understand the difference between night and day, promoting better sleep. By blocking out early morning daylight, you can prevent their day from starting too early. Create a clear distinction between day (bright and noisy) and night (calm, quiet, and dark) for better sleep results.
Little Dreams Consultancy really recommends blackout blinds or even a travel blackout blind – which can really help
block out any residual light, especially during the daytime for naps. As a tired mum who had an extremely sleep-shy baby, I can second this. We invested in a blackout blind from The Gro Company when my daughter was a newborn, and it 's still saving us from early morning wakeup calls eight years later!
Introduce a bedtime routine
Even as early as the newborn phase, a consistent bedtime routine can help babies transition smoothly into sleep. Start with some quiet play to wind them down, followed by a bath, feed, and a short story or lullaby. Baby massage can also be a lovely bonding experience that signals it’s time to sleep. We loved baby massage and since we seemingly had the most alert baby of all time (and bath time excited her) we opted for massage, simple stories and nursery rhymes.
Remember, what works for one family, might not for you. It's about finding a bedtime routine that suits you and your baby.
Consider awake windows
Awake windows refer to the amount of time a baby can comfortably stay awake before needing sleep. While they vary by age, these guidelines can help you better understand your baby's sleep needs. However, pay attention to your baby’s cues! If they’re showing signs of tiredness earlier than
expected, shorten the awake time. If they’re not ready to sleep, give them a little more time before trying again. It’s all about finding the right balance for your baby. Check out the Little Dreams Consulting blog post on awake windows for more details!
Avoid sleep props
Here’s an important rule: If something’s working for you and your baby, there’s no need to change it. If you’re feeding or rocking your baby to sleep and it’s helping, don’t feel pressure to stop unless you want to. However, if your baby is waking frequently through the night (after 4 months) and isn’t hungry, it may be because they’re reliant on a sleep prop like feeding or rocking.
Encouraging independent sleep can help improve night-time rest without having to “cry it out.” With some guidance, your baby can learn to fall asleep confidently on their own.
A Gentle Reminder
Sleep deprivation is well and truly brutal. It affects your mood, your relationship, your patience, your joy. But these tips from Little Dreams Consulting, combined with a bit of patience and consistency, can really help your little one (and you) sleep better through the night.
